information to enable collaboration for furthering research and the development
of effective treatments in orthopaedics. Unfortunately I am unable to answer
e-mail concerning specific clinical questions or direct patients to individual
surgeons or information sources. If you are a patient or relative of a patient
you should direct any questions you have to your family doctor in the first
instance or to your own specialist.

Important
information Metal on Metal Hip Replacements
If you are a patient of Mr Peter Kay and have been
operated on by him or any member of his team I can assure you that you have not
been given (implanted with) a metal on metal hip replacement. Mr Kay has
however revised many metal on metal hip replacements but has never implanted a
metal on metal hip replacement into his patients at either primary or revision
hip replacement. This is because he has always believed that conventional hip
replacement with either metal on plastic or ceramic on plastic joint surfaces
has, and continues to, deliver the best long term results even in young
patients and this is supported not only by his personal experience but also by
data from International Joint Replacement Registries world wide.

Who am
I?
I am Peter Kay,
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrightington
Hospital (WWL NHS
Foundation Trust), Honorary Clinical Professor University of Central Lancashire
and Reader in Orthopaedics, University of Manchester. I was Previously Consultant
in Orthopaedics and Trauma at North Manchester General and Manchester
Children's Hospitals (1992-1998).
I
trained on the North West training programme with fellowships in joint
reconstruction and trauma in Stuttgart and joint replacement at Wrightington Hospital. Degrees in
Medicine from Manchester University and Mathematics and Computing from the Open
University. I am Fellow of both the Royal College of
Surgeons of England and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
I am
President of the British Orthopaedic Association and Past President of the
British Hip Society. I have been a Consultant for a total of 19 years the last
12 years at Wrightington specialising in Hip and Knee
surgery.
My
clinical interests are in hip and knee replacement surgery. Revision
joint replacement surgery for loosening and infection and knee arthroscopy.
Multidisciplinary approach to arthroplasty services, autologous blood transfusion and bone banking.
Research
interests in revision arthroplasty surgery for
infection. Founder member of the Bone Infection Group
Manchester. Multidisciplinary research into bacterial
contamination, host immunology and genetic susceptibility to infection. Bacteriology, histology, molecular biology and genetics of deep
infection. Research into surface phenomena in
infection. One and Two stage techniques for revision surgery in
infection. Influence of tissue stability on musculoskeletal
infection.
Clinical
and research Interests in the use of bone graft to
reconstruct failed joint replacement, research worker with the National Tissue
Bank on the the use of bone from bone banks to
reconstruct the skeleton around hip and knee replacements. Development of
longer lasting joint replacements using new materials combining the excellent
long term results of successful joint over the years with enhanced materials to
reduce wear of the joints to give even better long term results particularly in
the young patient.

Bone Infection Group, Manchester (BIG MAN)
The Bone
Infection Group was formed in 1995. It is a multidisciplinary group based in
Manchester consisting of the University of Manchester Department of
Orthopaedics, University of Manchester Department of Infectious Disease,
Departments of Microbiology, Histopathology and Infection Control North
Manchester, Public Health Laboratory South Manchester, University of Manchester
Department of Microbiology, Regional Blood Transfusion Service and the
University of Manchester Department of Immunology.
The areas of
study are as follows:
- Contamination
of Primary Joint Replacement
- Biofilms on Prosthetic Joints
- Use of
Histology, Electron microscopy and Microbiology prosthetic joint infection
- Use of PCR in diagnosing joint infection
- Blood
transfusion and Immunological modulation in joint replacement

The North West Bone Bank
Research Group is a group of scientists and clinicians with the aim of
understand the science behind bone banking. The areas of interest are:-
- Bacteriology of bone
banking
- Markers of Bone Morphogenesis
- Genetics of infection
and loosening
- Research into
serological evidence of aseptic loosening
- Effect of blood
transfusion on bone morphogenesis

ABC Travelling Fellowship
I visited
Orthopaedic Centres in America and Canada in the summer of 1998 on the American
British and Canadian Travelling Fellowship representing the Britsih
Orthopaedic Association. The fellowship is an exchange between Britain,
America, Canada, Austrailia, New Zealand and South
Africa. The various national orthopaedic associations selecting orthopaedic
surgeons to visit the major orthopaedic centres arround
the world over a six week period and exchange views, research and experience to
promote the development of orthopaedics internationally. A description of the
